Michael D. Kennedy (Star Herald): The Value of Community Newspapers

When I was in high school I was immersed in sports. For me it was football and wrestling. I loved football. Still do.

Every fall Friday we played our football games, and every fall Saturday I woke early, ran downstairs, grabbed the morning newspaper and turned to the sports pages to read about the game I’d played in just the night before. I already knew what happened. Still, I wanted to read about it.

I was raised to believe that if you do your job, rewards take care of themselves. So I worked hard at football, honed my defensive skills, and during my junior and senior years of high school I was one of two starting cornerbacks. But that was not reward enough. I wanted recognition.
