Right now, Chuck Plunkett is my hero.
As Editorial Page Editor of the Denver Post, knew he was risking his job when he blasted the newspaper’s hedge-fund owners as “vulture capitalists” who had hobbled Colorado’s largest newspaper.
And tonight, he is unemployed.
Mr. Plunkett did what may great Americans have done throughout history. He gave up his livelihood to do what he thinks is right.
I’ve done it. Some of you have, too.
It’s not my place to say what anyone else should do, or to cast judgment of anyone who keeps a job because they have to put food on the table.
However, at this moment, Chuck Plunkett is my hero.
I wonder how many other heroes will step up. How many folks at Digital First, Gannett, Gatehouse and other venture capitalist groups will resign in the near future, assuming they aren’t fired first?
Chuck, I’ve been there. I resigned, too. I had other options and I’m sure you do, too, whether or not you realize what they are tonight.
Yes, Chuck Plunkett is my hero.
My list of heroes is growing every day.
