Highland California: Incredible shrinking newsrooms

James Folmer, Highland Community News

When I was editor of the Daily Facts, the chain was called MediaNews Group. The owner, Dean Singleton, flew his editors to Denver, letting us tour the flagship and spend the weekend at the C Lazy U dude ranch. I rode a palomino named Harley.

The trend in the industry has been to buy up all the papers in a given region and consolidate editing, feature pages and sports sections. From a management standpoint, I couldn’t argue against that — as long as the owners still invested in robust local journalism.

Sadly, those days are fading.
