Cape Cod Times: GateHouse Media must classify drivers as employees, not contractors.

BOSTON — The state Appeals Court on Tuesday affirmed a previous court decision that GateHouse Media Massachusetts Inc., a company that publishes more than 100 daily or weekly newspapers in the state, including the Cape Cod Times, must classify a group of delivery drivers as employees rather than independent contractors.

A Superior Court judge ruled in 2014 that David King, a delivery driver for The Patriot Ledger, a Quincy-based daily newspaper published by GateHouse Media, was an employee of the company even though GateHouse classified him as an independent contractor, according to the court’s decision.
