The U.S. Commerce Department-imposed tariff on Canadian newsprint continues to drive up costs for community newspapers, but an Alabama senator is among a bipartisan group of federal lawmakers who are trying to at least temporarily halt the price spiral and bring attention to the value of local news operations.

Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat and former U.S. Attorney from Birmingham, has been talking to Alabama news reporters on a weekly call to field questions on a wide range of topics. Thursday’s call focused on newsprint tariffs and law enforcement.
