Newspapers are reluctant to cover newspaper-related topics because the news is not usually about us; it’s about issues that affect readers. Our role has been pretty simple for the last two and a half centuries: keep citizens informed of the news in their communities and hold government officials accountable for the decisions they make or fail to make.
The responsibility of acting as a fourth estate to our society is crucial. It protects the freedoms we all hold dear, shedding light on those who would try to manipulate, suppress or extinguish information for personal gain and hold accountable those who would attack the foundation of our nation. It helps provide the necessary balance for a truly free society.
